Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare)

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant from the carrot family, originally from the Mediterranean region. It has an upright, hard stem and narrowly feathered leaves. The yellow flowers form into greenish-brown, aromatic smelling fruits. The taste of fennel is slightly bitter and reminiscent of anise or licorice.

Health effects

Fennel has been used since ancient times for its antispasmodic effects, for example for digestive problems, menopausal symptoms and as a cough remedy. Hildegard von Bingen recommended fennel for hangovers, sadness and to strengthen the brain. In Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, fennel is also widely used, among other things to relieve digestive problems and cramps.

Health hazards

Although fennel is generally well tolerated, allergic reactions such as skin rashes, gastrointestinal problems or diarrhea can occur in rare cases. Particular caution is advised for pregnant women and children, as fennel oil contains the substances methyleugenol and estragole, which are said to have a carcinogenic effect. Therefore, fennel tea or fennel oil should only be consumed in these cases after consultation with a doctor.
