Lemons (Citrus lemon) are one of the most well-known and popular citrus fruits worldwide. Health Effects and Healing Properties

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, lemons are considered "cooling" and are used to relieve fever, cough, and sore throat. In Ayurvedic medicine, lemons are considered "pitta-reducing" and are believed to promote digestion. Medieval writings such as those by Hildegard von Bingen praise the lemon as a remedy for jaundice, cough, and digestive problems. In homeopathy, the essence of lemon is used to treat depression, anxiety, and exhaustion.

Potential Health Risks

Despite the many positive effects, lemons can also pose risks if consumed in excess. The high acid content can cause heartburn, stomach pain, or tooth enamel damage in sensitive individuals. Lemon drinks should therefore not be consumed too hot, and the mouth should be rinsed afterward. In cases of kidney or bladder stones, consumption can promote the formation of uric acid crystals. Heated honey in lemon drinks may contain the potentially carcinogenic hydroxymethylfurfural. Overall, however, the risks are low with moderate consumption.
