Juniper Berries (Juniperus)

Juniper berries are the fruits of the juniper shrub (Juniperus), an evergreen coniferous plant that grows wild in many regions of the northern hemisphere. The bluish-black, berry-like fruits have a characteristic, aromatic flavor often described as spicy-resinous. They are small, round, and reach a diameter of about 4-12 millimeters. Juniper berries are frequently used in cooking, for example, as a spice for game and meat dishes or for the production of gin.

Health Effects of Juniper Berries

In Traditional Chinese Medicine and homeopathy, juniper berries have been valued for their alleged healing properties for centuries. They are said to have anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and digestive properties. Medieval writings, such as those by Hildegard von Bingen, also contain references to the medicinal use of juniper berries. However, most of these applications have not yet been substantiated by comprehensive clinical studies.

Potential Health Risks

Although juniper berries are considered relatively safe in moderate amounts, high doses or excessive consumption of juniper extracts can cause health problems. These may include gastrointestinal issues, kidney or liver damage. Therefore, the consumption of juniper berries or preparations should be done in consultation with a doctor, especially if you have pre-existing conditions or are taking medications.
