Elder Flowers (Sambucus nigra)

Elder flowers come from the black elder (Sambucus nigra), a widely distributed shrub or small tree. It grows wild in forests, at forest edges and in hedges, but also in gardens as an ornamental shrub. The flat, umbel-shaped flower heads consist of many small, white flowers with five petals. They have a sweet scent and bloom from May to July. The flowers are often harvested and processed into elder flower syrup, elder flower liqueur or elder flower tea. They taste slightly spicy and floral.

Health Effects

Elder flowers have long been used in folk medicine and naturopathy. They are said to have anti-inflammatory, expectorant and diaphoretic effects. Therefore, elder flowers are used for colds, flu and fever. They are also attributed diuretic and laxative properties. In homeopathy, preparations made from elder flowers are used for rheumatism, gout and sciatica. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, they are considered "cold-dispelling" and are used for fever and swelling. Hildegard von Bingen recommended elder flowers for gout and rheumatism.

Health Risks

Elder flowers are considered very well tolerated. However, allergic reactions can occur in sensitive individuals. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should also avoid larger amounts, as the flowers can have a laxative effect. In general, extracts from elder flowers should not be drunk in too large quantities, as they are slightly laxative and diuretic. Excessive consumption can lead to diarrhea and vomiting. The leaves, unripe fruits and seeds of the elder contain toxic substances and must not be consumed.
