Mallow Blue (Malva sylvestris)

The mallow blue, also known as common mallow, is a perennial plant widely distributed in Europe and Asia. It grows preferably on roadsides, in gardens and on fallow land. The mallow blue is easily recognizable by its characteristic, five-lobed, light purple flowers that appear from June to September. The leaves are round, lobed and softly hairy. The whole plant has a slightly sweet, almost marshmallow-like taste.

Health Effects of Mallow Blue

In Traditional Chinese Medicine and homeopathy, mallow blue has been used for centuries to treat various ailments. It is said to have anti-inflammatory, expectorant and antispasmodic effects. Extracts from the flowers and leaves are therefore used for coughs, bronchitis, stomach problems and rheumatism. References to the healing properties of mallow can also be found in the medieval medicine of Hildegard von Bingen.

Potential Risks of Consumption

Although mallow blue is considered relatively non-toxic, caution should be exercised when consuming extracts or teas. In some cases, intolerances such as nausea, vomiting or diarrhea may occur. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid consuming mallow extracts. In general, it is advisable to consult a doctor before taking them, especially if you are taking other medications.
