Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans)
Nutmeg is the seed kernel of the fruit of the nutmeg tree (Myristica fragrans). This evergreen tree is native to the Moluccas in Indonesia. The oval, grayish-brown seed kernels are surrounded by a reddish, net-like covering (mace). Nutmeg exudes an intense, spicy aroma and has an aromatic, slightly bitter-sharp taste.
Health Effects
In Traditional Chinese Medicine and homeopathy, nutmeg is attributed a warming and invigorating effect. It is said to stimulate digestion, have an antispasmodic effect, and strengthen the circulation. Hildegard von Bingen recommended nutmeg for stomach ailments, insomnia, and weakness. However, there is no scientific evidence for these healing effects.
Health Risks
Excessive consumption of nutmeg extracts such as teas or macerations can be toxic. Symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, hallucinations, and cramps can occur with as little as 5-10 grams. In the long term, liver and kidney damage may result. Therefore, the consumption of nutmeg extracts should be avoided. The use as a spice in normal amounts is harmless.
