Rose Blossoms (Rosa)

Rose blossoms belong to the genus Rosa within the family Rosaceae. There are over 100 different species of roses, which are distributed all over the world. The most well-known species are the Apothecary's rose (Rosa gallica), the dog rose (Rosa canina), and the Damask rose (Rosa damascena). Rose blossoms have a characteristic flower shape with five petals and numerous stamens. The colors range from white to pink to dark red. The taste of the blossoms is slightly sweet and floral.

Health Effects and Healing Properties

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), rose blossoms have been used for centuries to treat various ailments. They are considered "heart-opening" and are said to promote blood circulation. Rose blossoms are also used in homeopathy, for example, for heart problems, anxiety disorders, and depression. Hildegard von Bingen recommended rose blossoms to strengthen the heart and calm the mind. In Ayurvedic medicine, rose blossoms are used to treat inflammation and promote digestion.

Health Hazards

When drinking extracts from rose blossoms (maceration or tea), no known health hazards are expected, provided the blossoms have not been treated with pesticides. Allergic reactions are possible but rather rare. When taking rose blossoms in powder form or as a dietary supplement, attention should be paid to the dosage, and a doctor should be consulted in case of doubt.
