Savory (Satureja)

Savory, also known as Satureja, is an aromatic plant native to the Mediterranean countries and the Middle East. It grows as a small, bushy shrub with thin, woody stems and small, green leaves. The leaves are oval-shaped and covered with fine hairs, giving them a velvety appearance. Savory has an intense, spicy flavor reminiscent of thyme, but slightly milder and more peppery. The plant is frequently used in Mediterranean cuisine to add a distinctive flavor to dishes such as beans, lentils, meat, and fish.

Health Effects and Potential Healing Properties

In Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic tradition, savory is considered beneficial for digestion and strengthening the immune system. Some studies suggest that the plant possesses antibacterial and antioxidant properties, which may have positive effects on health. However, most of these studies have not yet been conclusively evaluated, and further research is needed.

Health Hazards

When drinking extracts or teas made from savory, no known health hazards are expected if the plant is used in moderation. However, as with all herbs, excessive intake should be avoided, as high doses may potentially cause side effects. Pregnant and breastfeeding women, as well as individuals with pre-existing medical conditions, should consult a doctor before taking savory supplements.
